UNSMIL welcomes mediation efforts to address the dispute over the constitutional judiciary.

Tripoli, 5 January 2026 (Lana) The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomed all mediation efforts by Libyan stakeholders to address the dispute over the constitutional judiciary, including the formation of a mediation committee composed of renowned Libyan legal experts.
The mission stated that the committee aims to present options that will ensure the continuity of constitutional oversight and safeguard the judiciary’s essential role as a cornerstone of the Libyan state, underscoring the importance of resolving this dispute to preserve the unity and independence of the Libyan judicial system.
The mission said that the committee is composed of retired Judge Hussein Al-Buaishi, Professor Al-Koni Abboudah, retired Judge Al-Mabrouk Al-Fakhri, and lawyer Essam El-Mawi, all of whom possess decades of distinguished service within Libya’s judicial and legal systems, stressing its commitment to support the committee in their work and their efforts to resolve this dispute.
UNSMIL stressed the need for this initiative to help preserve the unity of the judiciary and ensure consistency in the judicial practice and rulings throughout Libya, which is of crucial significance for all aspects of the lives of Libyan citizens, calling on all relevant stakeholders to engage constructively with the mediation committee to ensure the success of its efforts.
