Local government discusses technical solutions to address groundwater seepage in Zliten

Tripoli, January 1, 2026 (LANA) – The Ministry of Local Government of the Government of National Unity discussed with the head of the Higher Technical Committee for Monitoring Groundwater Infiltration, Cracks, and Landslides ways to enhance institutional coordination among relevant authorities to address the rising groundwater levels in Zliten Municipality and its negative impacts on citizens and infrastructure.
This came during an expanded meeting held by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Local Government for Municipal Affairs, Mustafa Ahmed Salem, with the head of the Higher Technical Committee, Saleh Al-Sadiq, and in the presence of the Secretary-General of the High Council for Local Administration, Nasr Al-Mahtout. The meeting reviewed the latest developments related to this phenomenon and discussed the measures taken to mitigate its repercussions.
The attendees emphasized the importance of activating specialized technical solutions and plans for groundwater drainage, strengthening sewage networks, and developing water management mechanisms in the affected areas, in coordination with relevant authorities and based on preliminary technical studies.
The meeting also addressed warnings issued by the National Center for Emergency, Crisis and Disaster Management regarding rising sea levels, and the need for advance preparedness and data collection, as part of monitoring the repercussions of climate change and the recent heavy rainfall in the country.
