Audit Bureau Report: Libyan public debt reached (270) billion dinars by the year 2024

Tripoli, December 31, 2025 (LANA) – A new report by the Audit Bureau revealed that Libya's public debt reached 270 billion Libyan dinars by 2024. This figure comprises 84 billion dinars owed by the Government of National Accord, which the Bureau audited, and 186 billion dinars owed by the Central Bank of Libya in the east of the country, which the Bureau did not audit.

The Audit Bureau stated in its 2024 annual report, released Wednesday, that the public debt has remained unchanged since 2020 and could have been reduced to 31 billion dinars. The report added that a portion of the public debt could have been repaid, equivalent to the savings achieved in some years.

The report clarified that the 84 billion dinar public debt figure does not include the 186 billion dinars owed by the governments in the east of the country, as stated in the Central Bank of Libya's statement issued on April 6, 2025, which the Bureau did not audit.

The report, comprising 18 chapters and 750 pages, presents the overall financial situation of the state, the results of performance evaluations of various state sectors, and the Audit Bureau's internal reporting.

The Audit Bureau cautioned against misinterpreting the report, deviating from its professional and objective course, and exploiting it for political conflicts or to achieve private agendas. It clarified that its report focuses solely on the activities of the interim Government of National Unity and does not include the activities of the government appointed by the House of Representatives. The Bureau noted that its preparation and presentation of the report involved compiling and summarizing audit and evaluation reports and the outputs of the operational plan, designed according to a methodology of relative importance and risk. This methodology aims to guide oversight tasks toward interim objectives, contributing to policy correction and the proper use of public funds.
