Customs authority thwarts an attempt to smuggle €490,000 through Misrata Airport.

Misrata 31 December 2025 (Lana)  The Customs Authority thwarted an attempt to smuggle approximately half a million euros out of the country.

A statement issued by the Authority stated that members of the Misrata Airport Customs Center, in cooperation with the airport's Internal Security Service, apprehended a Libyan passenger traveling to Istanbul, Turkey, and a carefully concealed belt containing €490,290 was found in his possession.

The Authority confirmed that the incident constitutes a violation of Customs Law No. (10) of 2010, as well as Law No. (1) of 2005 concerning banks and currency, stating that all necessary legal procedures have been taken to refer the suspect and the seized funds to the competent prosecution office, in accordance with its jurisdiction.

The Customs Authority emphasized its continued efforts to combat smuggling, contributing to the protection of the national economy.
