Tripoli, 31 December 2025 (Lana)—The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed its concern over the escalating dispute over the constitutional judiciary, considering it as a risk undermining the unity, independence, and integrity of the judiciary.
The mission said in a press statement yesterday that the judiciary is a core pillar preserving the unity of the state of Libya, and were the judiciary to become divided, it would have far-reaching implications on all aspects of Libyan life.
UNSMIL urged all parties to avoid actions that could divide the judiciary or make provocative statements that could increase tensions, stressing the need for restraint given the country's political divisions.
UNSMIL affirmed that a unified and independent judiciary is a cornerstone of the rule of law and democratic governance.
The Mission urged all relevant Libyan judicial and political actors to engage in constructive dialogue to resolve this important issue in a manner that preserves judicial institutional unity and serves the higher national interest for all of Libya, stressing that it’s ready to support Libyan-led and owned, consensus-based efforts aimed at safeguarding a unified judiciary and the rule of law.
