The UN mission in Libya welcomes efforts to address the phenomenon of arbitrary detention in Libya.

Tripoli, December 28, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) welcomed all efforts to address the human rights of detainees, particularly those related to combating arbitrary detention and ensuring full civilian oversight of all detention centers.
In a statement, the Mission also commended the positive step taken by the National Interim Committee for Monitoring the Conditions of Prisoners and Prisons, established in Benghazi on December 23.
UNSMIL expressed its hope that this initiative, along with the Human Rights Committee for Monitoring the Conditions of Prisons and Detention Centers established in Tripoli on June 4, 2025, and the ongoing efforts of the Attorney General, will contribute to effectively addressing the phenomenon of arbitrary detention, improving conditions in detention centers, and strengthening human rights and the rule of law throughout Libya.
The Mission affirmed its readiness to provide technical support and assistance in accordance with international standards.
