Tripoli, December 28, 2025 (LANA) – The Abu Salim branch of the Municipal Guard issued an official notice to shop owners, public markets, and retail outlets within the Abu Salim municipality, prohibiting the sale, display, or distribution of any products, symbols, or promotional materials related to what is known as the New Year or Christmas.
The branch explained that this measure is based on the provisions of Islamic Sharia, emphasizing that the only religiously recognized holidays for Muslims are Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. It is neither religiously nor legally permissible to promote, contribute to, or support any occasions that contradict the beliefs and religious values of the Muslim community.
The notice clarified that the prohibition includes, but is not limited to, clothing, hats, gifts, decorations, sweets, and any promotional or advertising materials associated with this occasion.
The Abu Salim branch of the Municipal Guard stated that this decision is based on the laws and regulations governing the agency's work and the legal powers granted to it to monitor commercial activities, address violations, and prevent the display or sale of goods that contravene public order, public morals, and the religious values of society, in accordance with applicable legislation.
The branch emphasized that all legal measures will be taken against violators, including administrative enforcement, confiscation of offending materials, and temporary or permanent closure of establishments, without any leniency, in order to preserve Islamic identity and safeguard the values of Libyan society within the Abu Salim municipality.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the Municipal Guard's commitment to performing its duties within the framework of the law, and calling on everyone to cooperate and adhere to the provisions of this statement.
