Tripoli, December 24, 2025 (LANA) – The U.S. Embassy in Tripoli offered its condolences to the Libyan people following the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of Lieutenant General Mohammed al-Haddad, Chief of the General Staff of the Libyan Army, and several of his companions, as they returned from an official mission to Ankara, Turkey.
The Embassy affirmed that Lieutenant General al-Haddad was a professional and dedicated officer who consistently prioritized the Libyan national interest. Over the years, he was one of the United States' most prominent partners in efforts to enhance military professionalism and unify Libyan security institutions.
The Embassy also mourned the loss of Lieutenant General al-Fitouri Ghraibil, a prominent member of the Joint Military Commission (5+5), praising his pivotal role in advancing and implementing the 2020 ceasefire agreement and describing him as a trusted and valued partner of the United States.
The Embassy also extended its condolences to Brigadier General Mahmoud al-Qatawi, Director of the Military Manufacturing Authority; Mr. Mohammed al-Asawi Diab, Advisor to the Chief of the General Staff; and Mr. Mohammed Omar Ahmed Mahjoub, from the Media Office.
The embassy concluded its statement by saying that, coinciding with Libya's commemoration of its Independence Day, the United States honors General Mohamed al-Haddad's commitment to building a unified, sovereign, and stable Libya, and reiterates its support for Libyan-led efforts toward a secure and peaceful future that meets the aspirations of the Libyan people.
