Tripoli, December 24, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed its deep sorrow over the tragic plane crash that claimed the lives of Lieutenant General Mohammed Al-Haddad, Chief of the General Staff of the Libyan Army, and his colleagues as they returned from an official mission to Ankara.

In a statement issued late Tuesday night, the Mission also mourned the loss of Lieutenant General Al-Fitouri Ghraibil, Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces and member of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission, who played a pivotal role in the signing of the 2020 ceasefire agreement; Brigadier General Mahmoud Al-Qatawi, Director of the Military Manufacturing Authority; Mr. Mohammed Al-Asawi Diab, Advisor to the Chief of the General Staff; and Mr. Mohammed Omar Ahmed Mahjoub, photographer in the Media Office of the Chief of the General Staff.

The Mission stated that it recalls with appreciation the dedicated service rendered by Lieutenant General Al-Haddad and his companions. It noted that during his tenure as Chief of the General Staff, he was a staunch advocate for the unification of Libyan military and civilian institutions, and for peace and stability for a strong Libya, placing the national interest above all other considerations. He was also a professional and patriotic officer, deeply devoted to his country.

The mission offered its condolences to the families of the victims, their colleagues, the 5+5 Joint Military Commission, and the entire Libyan people, expressing its solidarity with all those affected by this great tragedy during this difficult time.
