The National Unity Government declares (3) days of mourning for the Chief of the General Staff and his companions

Tripoli, December 23, 2025 (LANA) – The Government of National Unity declared three days of national mourning, during which flags will be flown at half-staff at all state institutions and official ceremonies will be suspended, in mourning for the lives of the Chief of the General Staff of the Libyan Army, Lieutenant General Mohammed Al-Haddad, and his companions, who perished in a plane crash while returning from an official mission to Turkey.
In a statement issued late Tuesday night, the government mourned the following:
- Lieutenant General Mohammed Al-Haddad, Chief of the General Staff of the Libyan Army.
- Lieutenant General Al-Fitouri Ghraibil, Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces.
- Brigadier General Mahmoud Al-Qatawi, Director of the Military Manufacturing Authority.
- Mr. Mohammed Al-Asawi Diab, Advisor to the Chief of the General Staff.
- Mr. Mohammed Omar Ahmed Mahjoub, photographer at the General Staff Media Office.
The government affirmed in its statement that the nation has lost a distinguished group of its men who served Libya with loyalty and dedication, setting an example of discipline, responsibility, and national commitment. They contributed their efforts to the service of the military establishment and the Libyan state. The government offered its condolences to their families and comrades in the armed forces.
According to the statement, the Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Defense to dispatch an official delegation to Ankara to ascertain the circumstances of the incident, follow up on the relevant procedures, and coordinate directly with the competent Turkish authorities to ensure the completion of the investigations and the implementation of all necessary measures within the established frameworks.
