The UN mission in Libya calls on the country's leaders to overcome their differences for a future of peace and stability.

Tripoli, December 23, 2025 (LANA) – The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Hanna Tetteh, congratulated the Libyan people on the 74th anniversary of Libya's independence.

In a statement issued on behalf of the mission, Tetteh commended the resilience and determination of the Libyan people in the face of ongoing challenges, expressing her deep respect for their continued efforts to achieve peace and stability and build a future based on social cohesion, equality, inclusive development, and the rule of law.

The mission reiterated its call to the country's leaders and institutions to overcome political and regional divisions and work towards forging a shared national vision that leads to a future of peace and prosperity.

The mission encouraged all parties to engage in good faith and take concrete steps towards unifying and strengthening state institutions, supporting stability, and moving forward with necessary economic reforms.

It also stressed the need to create the conditions for holding secure, inclusive, and credible elections that reflect the will of the Libyan people, as stated in the statement.

The statement said that independence is not merely a historical event, but an ongoing process towards building a state that prioritizes peace, security, and development, and places the interests of all citizens at the heart of its policies.

The UN mission affirmed its commitment to continuing to support the Libyan people in their aspirations for a stable and prosperous future.
