Tripoli, December 23, 2025 (LANA) – The Libyan people will commemorate the 74th anniversary of their independence tomorrow, Wednesday, December 24th. This independence was established based on UN Security Council Resolution 289, adopted on November 21, 1949.
This anniversary comes as history records an epic struggle waged by the Libyan people, in which nearly half the population sacrificed their lives for the freedom and independence of their country. This struggle unfolded through a series of heroic battles where Libyan blood was shed in defense of their land and honor, embodying national unity and reaffirming the strength of our social fabric.
Alongside the battles of the resistance, the Libyan people's memory on this national occasion cherishes the political struggles of their forefathers to achieve independence. These struggles were embodied in diplomatic debates and political battles that were documented in all regional and international forums, culminating in the issuance of UN Security Council Resolution 289. On December 24, 1951, King Idris al-Sanusi declared independence to the world and the Libyan people from the balcony of the Manar Palace in Benghazi, proclaiming that Libya had become a free, independent, and sovereign state, thanks to the Libyan people's struggle and resistance, and in implementation of the United Nations resolution.
On this occasion, Libyans reaffirm their commitment to their country's independence and unity, preserving its sovereignty over its land, airspace, and territorial waters. They are determined not to relinquish the long struggles written by their fathers and grandfathers with their blood and sacrifices, struggles that demonstrated unwavering will and the dream of a people who believed in their right to freedom and sovereignty.
As we commemorate Independence Day, we affirm that it is not merely an event in the annals of history, but a milestone we pause to reflect upon with pride and honor. On this day, we recall the meanings of dignity and unity, renewing our pledge to preserve our homeland, safeguard its resources, and work resolutely and responsibly for its future.
The Libyan people look forward on this day to security, stability, and prosperity prevailing throughout the entire nation. They hope for the realization of the desired national reconciliation, and for words and deeds to reflect a deep love for Libya and a sincere and faithful commitment to its reconstruction. They envision a single, unified country for all, from north to south and from east to west. May this anniversary mark the beginning of a new year filled with goodness and tranquility, a year in which this nation enjoys the richness and depth of its history, overcomes all adversity, and dedicates itself to work and development in all aspects of life.
Let us make Independence Day a driving force for strengthening our national unity, rejecting division, and believing that our homeland is large enough for everyone and can only be built by the hands of its loyal sons and daughters.
