“Independence Day renews hope for a stable state through real elections,” El-Sunni says.

New York, 23 December 2023 (Lana) Permanent Representative of Libya to the UN, Taher El-Sunni, said that Libya’s Independence Day, which falls on December 24th, represents a pivotal national milestone for renewing hope in the establishment of a stable state, emphasizing that Libyans had hoped this occasion would coincide with the anniversary of the elections that were scheduled for 2021, but this entitlement has not yet been reached.

In a tweet, El-Sonni stated that the failure of the electoral process is not due to a lack of initiatives or proposed solutions, but rather to the nature of the crisis itself, which he described as a purely political crisis characterized by the continued cycle of transitional phases.

He noted that the prolongation of these phases, in addition to foreign interventions, has contributed to deepening the political deadlock and hindered reaching a comprehensive settlement that fulfills the aspirations of Libyans to build legitimate and lasting institutions.

El-Sunni stressed that overcoming the current crisis requires a real political will that puts an end to temporary paths and paves the way for a clear political process leading to fair and transparent elections that express the free will of the Libyan people and establish a new phase of stability and strengthening national sovereignty.
