The United Nations calls for making rights the focus of the Libyan roadmap.

Tripoli, December 11, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) affirmed that the promotion and protection of human rights must remain at the heart of the country's new political roadmap, stressing that dignity, freedom, and justice are not privileges, but rather fundamental pillars for achieving peace and stability.
This came in a statement issued by the Mission today on the occasion of International Human Rights Day.
The Mission explained that this year's theme, "Human Rights – At the Heart of Our Daily Lives," clearly reflects the reality of Libya, which has suffered for years from conflict and division, leading to the erosion of trust and the weakening of state institutions.
It added that any violations – including arbitrary arrest, enforced disappearance, violence against women, and restrictions on freedoms – constitute an obstacle to the country's unity and the recovery of its social fabric.
It noted that the commemoration of International Human Rights Day comes at a pivotal moment for Libya, with the launch of a new political process that aspires to build a unified state.
The mission affirmed that the fundamental rights of all Libyans, foremost among them the right to political participation, to elect their leaders, and to enjoy the fruits of equitable development, must be an integral part of the next phase.
The mission also reiterated its commitment to integrating human rights principles into governance, security, and economic reform, emphasizing that inclusive participation—including the participation of women, persons with disabilities, and cultural groups—remains a key priority in its support for the path to stability in Libya.
