Al-Tarabulsi and his Iraqi counterpart affirm the need to intensify efforts to combat organized crime and migrant smuggling.

Brussels, December 10, 2025 (LANA) – The Minister of Interior of the Government of National Unity, Major General Imad al-Tarabulsi, and his Iraqi counterpart, Abdul Amir al-Shammari, emphasized on Wednesday the importance of intensifying joint efforts in combating organized crime, migrant smuggling, and human trafficking, as well as exchanging information and expertise.

The Iraqi News Agency (INA) quoted a statement from Minister al-Shammari's media office, in which al-Tarabulsi praised Iraq's active role in combating cross-border organized crime.

The statement added that Al-Shammari met with Al-Tarabulsi on the sidelines of the Second International Conference of the Global Alliance Against Migrant Smuggling, held in Brussels, Belgium. During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations and ways to enhance security cooperation between the two brotherly countries.

The statement further noted that "both sides emphasized the importance of intensifying joint efforts in combating organized crime, migrant smuggling, and human trafficking, as well as exchanging information and expertise. This will contribute to curbing the activities of criminal gangs that exploit the economic conditions in the region, which poses a cross-border security threat."

It continued, "The need to develop communication channels between the two countries' interior ministries was also stressed, along with the importance of benefiting from shared experiences and expertise, particularly in the area of ​​border security and addressing security challenges using modern methods. Furthermore, coordination in relevant international forums was strengthened."

The statement concluded by saying that "the Libyan side commended Iraq's active role in combating cross-border organized crime and the efforts exerted by the Iraqi Ministry of Interior in combating human smuggling networks, which contributes to the security and stability of the region."
