Tripoli, December 3, 2025 (LANA) – The U.S. Embassy in Libya expressed its continued cooperation with the Department of Antiquities to protect Libyan cultural heritage from looting and destruction.
This came in a tweet posted by the embassy on its Facebook page Tuesday evening.
In a video, the embassy reviewed the efforts undertaken by the United States to support the preservation of cultural heritage in Libya since 2005. These efforts included assistance in restoring and digitizing historical sites throughout the country, preserving mosaics and manuscripts in Ghadames, restoring a mosque in Awjila, recovering seven artifacts, and training Libyan archaeology experts from across Libya. The embassy noted that many of these projects were implemented under the U.S.-Libya Cultural Property Agreement.
The Libyan Department of Antiquities and the U.S. Embassy signed a work program in January 2025, based on a memorandum of understanding between the two parties, in the field of cultural heritage protection and combating antiquities smuggling.
The work program was signed on the sidelines of the Recovered Cultural Heritage Exhibition, held at the historic Red Castle (Assaraya Alhamra), in the presence of a number of interested parties and specialists in the fields of archaeology and culture.
The work program, signed by the Libyan Department of Antiquities and the US Embassy, includes a strategic plan spanning from 2024 to 2027. It aims to strengthen joint efforts to protect Libyan cultural heritage from smuggling and destruction, with a focus on enhancing the international role in preserving Libya's cultural identity.
