Tripoli, November 30, 2025 (LANA) – The High National Elections Commission announced its readiness to begin conducting presidential and parliamentary elections in mid-April 2026, provided that the necessary funding and security are secured, and an agreement is reached on the mechanism to support and oversee this crucial process under the two governments.
In a statement issued today, Sunday, regarding the demands directed at the Commission to conduct and implement the presidential and parliamentary elections, the Commission affirmed that it is exercising its sovereign role, guaranteed by the Constitutional Declaration, in overseeing the electoral process in all its aspects and requirements, within the framework of the state's sovereignty over its institutions and the laws and decisions issued by them.
The Council emphasized the Commission's independence and impartiality, which qualifies it to gain the trust of citizens and politicians of all persuasions, given the electoral options and practices it provides that enable them to exercise their right to choose their representatives in power.
The Council called on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to focus on the core of the dispute, namely the amendment of the electoral laws issued by the (6+6) Committee, and to work towards resolving these disputes immediately and referring them to the Commission without any delay or procrastination. This would allow the Commission to begin issuing the necessary regulations and implementation procedures in preparation for launching the process. The Council also urged UNSMIL not to be drawn into or comply with demands aimed at perpetuating the stagnation that has plagued the state's structure, and not to engage in paths that will not address the root causes of the problem but will only exacerbate it.
