The Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Libya stressed the importance of supporting the independence and impartiality of the Audit Bureau.

Tripoli, November 24, 2025 (LANA) – The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Resident Coordinator of the United Nations, Ulrika Richardson, stressed the importance of supporting the independence and impartiality of the Audit Bureau, given its direct impact on strengthening oversight and ensuring the transparency and objectivity of its reports.

This came during her meeting today in Tripoli with the Head of the Audit Bureau, Khaled Shakshak, accompanied by a delegation from the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), according to a statement published by the Bureau on its official page. Richardson emphasized the pivotal role of the Audit Bureau in ensuring effective oversight of public funds, promoting transparency, and combating corruption, which are fundamental pillars for supporting stability and building strong and effective institutions.

The Head of the Bureau briefed the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General on the Audit Bureau's role in Libya in strengthening oversight of public funds and supporting the principles of transparency, accountability, and combating corruption.

During the meeting, the agreement signed between the Libyan Audit Bureau and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) was discussed. This agreement represents a significant step towards strengthening cooperation between the two sides, both in the areas of technical support and institutional capacity building, and in monitoring development projects implemented within Libya.

Both sides emphasized the importance of aligning the program's projects with the country's priorities and working together to establish effective mechanisms to ensure the implementation of development programs in a way that achieves the best possible return at both the institutional and service levels.
