UN and African Union issue a joint statement to support Libya's efforts in peace and reconciliation.

New York, 16 November 2025 (Lana): The 9th Annual Conference of the African Union and the United Nations, recently held at the UN headquarters in New York, renewed the commitment of both parties to supporting peace and stability in Libya, welcoming the progress made in the national reconciliation and political processes.
This came in a joint statement issued at the conclusion of the conference, which was convened at the invitation of UN Secretary-General António Guterres and African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf to discuss peace and security challenges at the regional and international levels, including the situation developments in Libya.
Both sides commended the AU's ongoing efforts to promote national reconciliation among the various components of Libyan society, emphasizing that broadening community participation is a crucial factor in creating a supportive environment for the political process.
Regarding UN support, the conference reiterated its full support for the roadmap aimed at creating the necessary conditions for holding national elections that will end the transitional phase and return the country to a path of political stability.
The statement also welcomed the signing of the “Libyan National Peace and Reconciliation Charter” by several political and military parties, describing it as a pivotal step towards consolidating stability.
Both parties stressed the need for stronger coordination among international partners, particularly through the International Follow-Up Committee on Libya, to help Libyans rebuild a credible political process capable of leading to national elections.
The statement concluded that the success of the Libyan process requires close cooperation between national institutions and regional and international partners and the necessity to continue to support dialogue and reconciliation to ensure lasting peace and sustainable development in Libya.
