AU and UN Renew Their Commitment to Supporting Peace in Libya.

New York, November 13, 2025 (LANA) – The African Union and the United Nations today reaffirmed their commitment to supporting peace in Libya and strengthening their partnership for security and sustainable development.

This came during the ninth annual African Union-United Nations Conference, held today at the United Nations headquarters in New York, co-chaired by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres.

During the conference, both sides emphasized their shared commitment to supporting African peace processes in Libya, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, the Great Lakes region, the Sahel, and the Horn of Africa. They stressed the importance of promoting political solutions based on dialogue, mediation, and preventive diplomacy to address crises and armed conflicts on the continent.

Regarding Libya, the conference emphasized the need for continued coordination between the African Union and the United Nations to support the political process and comprehensive national reconciliation, contributing to stability, paving the way for development, and holding transparent and inclusive elections.

The conference highlighted the importance of providing sustainable funding for African Union-led peace processes, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2719 (2023), and called for accelerating the implementation of the joint roadmap between the two organizations in this regard.

The conference also emphasized cooperation in the areas of digital transformation, climate action, and inclusive development, stressing the vital role of women and youth in promoting peace and sustainable growth, and welcoming the African Union Convention on Ending Violence against Women and Girls as a significant achievement.

At the conclusion of the conference, the African Union and the United Nations agreed to hold their tenth annual conference in 2026 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to further deepen their strategic cooperation for the benefit of the African continent and the world.
