Tripoli, October 31, 2025 (LANA) – The European Union in Libya commemorated the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. The event was attended by the Minister of State for Women's Affairs in the Government of National Unity, Stephanie Khoury, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya, and a group of Libyan women and men from various civil society organizations and security agencies.
The EU Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, stated in a tweet that this occasion represents an opportunity to renew the commitment to empowering women and promoting their full and effective participation in building peace and stability in Libya. He noted that recognizing women as key actors in the peace process is a fundamental step towards establishing the principles of good governance and sustainable development.
The Ambassador highlighted the prominent and growing role of Libyan women in state institutions, including security agencies, anti-narcotics units, and the Police Academy, where they have demonstrated high competence, leadership, and initiative.
During the celebration, inspiring stories were shared by Libyan women from across the country, who recounted their experiences in leadership and resilience. They called for the swift adoption of the draft law on protecting women from violence and for ensuring their representation in the UN-sponsored political roadmap to support the political process in Libya, as stated in the Ambassador's tweet.
At the conclusion of the celebration, the European Union reaffirmed its support for Libyan women in their journey towards equal participation, commending their ongoing efforts to achieve inclusivity and sustainable peace in the country.
