Benghazi, October 29, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced that representatives of military and security bodies from across Libya agreed on Tuesday to open and operate a joint border security center within the next few weeks, considering it a step towards unifying Libyan security institutions.
The mission stated that the joint communications and information-sharing center on border security will be opened under the supervision of the Joint Technical Coordination Team, which was established with UNSMIL’s assistance last January.
The mission explained that the coordination team had established a similar information-sharing center in Tripoli last April. The two centers will work together to facilitate information sharing and support unified responses to border security challenges.
UNSMIL quoted the mission’s Senior Border Security Advisor, Ali Khalkhal, as saying, “The establishment of the joint center in Benghazi comes at a crucial moment that necessitates providing support for unifying the military institution and building mutual trust. This center will highlight how cooperation, dialogue, and joint technical planning can be translated into tangible progress on the ground, thus strengthening Libya’s path towards unified, effective, and secure border security management.” The mission noted that the coordination team had visited the site proposed by the Libyan National Army (LNA) as part of a two-day meeting held under the auspices of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on protecting Libya's borders and countering cross-border threats.
It stated that the coordination team reviewed and finalized the lists of new equipment and completed the training plan to support the activities of the two centers.
The mission pointed out that the Joint Technical Coordination Team is the first body to bring together senior military and security officials representing the Government of National Unity and the LNA to address all issues related to border security.
