Orlando reaffirms the EU's commitment to supporting Libyan institutions to strengthen land borders

Pulbished on:

Tripoli, October 29, 2025 (LANA) – The European Union Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, affirmed on Wednesday the EU's unwavering commitment to supporting Libyan institutions across the country to strengthen land borders, encourage the voluntary return of migrants to their countries of origin, and combat human rights abuses and international criminal networks that exploit vulnerable groups.

This came in a tweet posted by Ambassador Orlando on his Twitter account, commenting on the deaths of 18 undocumented migrants in a boat capsizing off the coast of Zawiya on Monday.

In the tweet, he stated that the tragic news of another shipwreck off the Libyan coast serves as a stark reminder of the heavy human toll resulting from migrant smuggling and trafficking.

The Ambassador emphasized that the EU will continue to invest in the development and stability of migrants' countries of origin, in cooperation with the United Nations and implementing partners, to ensure that the root causes of irregular migration are addressed and safe and sustainable solutions are provided.
