New York, October 27, 2025 (LANA) - Libya reiterated its emphasis on the need for international cooperation to combat the phenomenon of illicit arms trafficking, given the serious challenge it poses to its security and stability.
This came in a speech delivered by Ambassador Essam Omran Bin Zeitoun, a member of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Libya to the United Nations, before the meeting of the Committee on the United Nations Programme on Combating the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons (UN-CCSAP), held over the past two days in New York.
Bin Zeitoun stressed that confronting this phenomenon requires sincere international cooperation based on mutual trust, the exchange of information and expertise, and support for affected countries in monitoring their borders and controlling smuggling operations.
He also stressed that combating the illicit arms trade must not infringe upon the sovereign right of states to possess conventional weapons for legitimate self-defense, in accordance with Article (51) of the UN Charter. He called for linking anti-arms trafficking programs to sustainable development efforts, particularly Goal 16 related to peace, justice, and strong institutions.
In his speech, Ben Zeitoun reiterated Libya's commitment to working with all international partners to build a more secure and stable world, free from the flow of illicit weapons that threaten security and development.
