Ramallah, October 27, 2025 (LANA) – Palestinian Minister of Culture Imad Hamdan congratulated Libyan writer and novelist Aisha Al-Asfar on winning the Jerusalem Prize for Arab Women in Literary Creativity – Arabic Novel category, for her novel "Ishi," which addresses the issues of Libyan and Arab people and their suffering from marginalization, displacement, and social violence.

Minister Hamdan said in a press statement carried by the Palestinian News Agency (WAFA) that Libyan writer Aisha Al-Asfar's victory reflects the leadership of Arab women in the fields of literature and thought, and confirms that Palestine will remain a beacon of creativity and Arab cultural identity.

He added that the novel is not a passing work, but rather "a document of honor and a certificate of creativity that saves memory from falsification and constitutes a window through which peoples can see their true nature." He pointed out that the participation of 198 Arab novels in the competition is evidence of the strong presence of female writers in the Arab narrative scene and the depth of their influence on modern culture.

The Minister continued, "The award comes in the name of Jerusalem, our eternal capital, the gateway to heaven, and the cradle of stories. It stems from the Palestinian government's vision of instilling awareness of the importance of culture based on our stories and narratives. It also expresses Palestine's gratitude and appreciation for Arab and Palestinian women and their historic role in the Arab cultural creativity movement."

He pointed out that this award, which bears the name "Jerusalem, the Eternal Capital," falls within the framework of the Palestinian government's strategy aimed at protecting national identity, preserving history and civilization, and elevating authentic Arab culture.

The Palestinian Ministry of Culture, in cooperation with the Ministries of Women's Affairs and Jerusalem Affairs, announced in Ramallah that writer Aisha Al-Asfar won the award for her published novel "Ishi," which addresses profound topics such as the memory of the desert and the social wounds of Libyan society throughout its history, with a focus on the influence of internal circumstances and conflicts.

It's worth noting that the Jerusalem Prize for Arab Women for Literary Creativity in the Published Arabic Novel was launched by the Palestinian Ministry of Culture on April 28th. 198 female novelists and short story writers from various Arab countries applied for the prize, which comes as part of the celebration of the declaration of Jerusalem as the Capital of Arab Women for the years 2025-2026, in recognition of the role of Arab and Palestinian women in enriching cultural and social life and literary creativity.
