Brussels, 19 October 2025 (Lana): The European Commission revealed a new proposal, dubbed Pact for the Mediterranean, aimed at restructuring the European Union's relations with countries on its southern flank, including Libya, Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria.
The Commission said that the Pact, announced Thursday, includes a set of projects in areas vital to EU countries, to be implemented in ten countries bordering the Mediterranean: Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, and Israel.
According to the text of the Pact, it aims to strengthen relations and achieve deeper cooperation and integration in the shared Mediterranean region through a comprehensive transformation based on shared ownership, creativity, and mutual responsibility.
It also focused on issues central to EU countries, including trade integration, migration, and border management, as well as the growing role of the Southern Mediterranean region in European supply chains, particularly in the sectors of agriculture, fertilizers, and vital raw materials.
The Pact also includes plans for projects related to reducing carbon emissions, combating climate change, promoting renewable energy, water security, and disaster preparedness, in addition to investing in the private sector, digitalization, and artificial intelligence, along with an initiative to establish a Mediterranean university to promote education and cultural exchange.
