UN mission: The laws set by the 6+6 committee contain loopholes

Tripoli, October 16, 2025 (LANA) - The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said on Thursday that the laws drafted by the 6+6 Committee are an important step, but they contain loopholes that could nullify voters' choices.
The mission pointed out some of these loopholes, namely that the results of the legislative elections are linked to the success of the presidential elections. If the presidential elections cannot be held for any reason, all procedures related to the legislative elections are also considered null and void, even if the elections have already taken place.
The mission added that if presidential and legislative elections are held and the results of the former are contested, this will also affect the validity of the legislative elections. It noted that this linkage, for example, is legally unnecessary and does not respect voters' choices.
The Advisory Committee emphasized that amending the electoral framework to address contentious issues, including separating the results of the presidential and legislative elections, is essential for the success of the elections.
According to the mission, more than 80 percent of participants in the UNSMIL survey agreed with this recommendation.
