Tetteh: Corruption that benefits private interests affects funding for development, healthcare, and education.

New York, October 14, 2025 (LANA) - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya (SRSG), Hannah Tetteh, stressed that corruption fueled by private interests affects funding for development, healthcare, education, and employment in Libya.

In her regular briefing to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Tetteh said that economic and financial governance is not functioning well, and the lack of oversight over some activities, particularly those related to monitoring fuel distribution, increases economic pressures and challenges.

She added that the Central Bank's announcement of the discovery of $6.5 billion in its Benghazi branch, which was not brought in through legal channels, is a concern for Libya's financial stability. She noted that this brings the total amount of illicit funds discovered this year to 10 billion dinars.

The UN envoy indicated that this practice undermines the stability of the Libyan dinar in the market and requires legal accountability and financial oversight. She welcomed the Central Bank's decision to take all necessary legal measures to combat corruption.
