New York, October 14, 2025 (LANA) - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya (SRSG), Hannah Tetteh, called on the Presidential Council to expedite the development and implementation of a mechanism to strengthen the security sector in western Libya.

In her regular briefing to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Tetteh said that the tensions prevailing in western Libya, particularly in Tripoli, have decreased thanks to local and international mediation efforts, particularly the intervention of the Turkish government.

She emphasized that mediation efforts, with the support of the Turkish government, facilitated the implementation of the understanding between the concerned parties, the withdrawal of the Deterrence Force from Mitiga Airport, and the withdrawal of Government of National Accord forces from the capital. She also welcomed this progress, as well as new appointments in security agencies and the handover of detainees to the Office of the Public Prosecutor.

Tetteh noted that a stable security environment is essential to ensuring political progress, noting that UNSMIL is working with the Presidential Council to develop a mechanism for reforming the security sector in western Libya to maintain the truce and achieve sustainable security in the western region.
