New York, October 14, 2025 (LANA) - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya (SRSG), Hannah Tetteh, revealed that the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) will be forced to adopt a different approach if the House of Representatives and the High Council of State fail to agree on the High National Elections Commission and the constitutional and legal framework governing the electoral process.
During her regular briefing to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Tetteh warned that if this demand is not met, the mission will request the Security Council's support to adopt a different approach to advance the Libyan political transition to a meaningful outcome that addresses the challenges facing Libya.
Tetteh said that the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) is engaged with the House of Representatives and the High Council of State to help them reach an agreement on the High National Elections Commission and a workable electoral framework, welcoming the commitments of the various parties and their support for the roadmap.
The head of the UN mission noted that the mission is completing its preparations for a structured dialogue among all Libyan stakeholders, and plans to hold it in plenary sessions next November, with four thematic groups: governance, economy, security, national reconciliation, and human rights.
She added that current Libyan leaders and institutions have expressed their commitment to engaging positively, but their actions have not matched their words. She emphasized that alternatives will be provided if the current approach reaches a dead end.
