New York, October 9, 2025 (LANA) – The committee tasked with monitoring frozen Libyan assets abroad, formed by a decision of the House of Representatives, stressed the need to ensure that these assets, their revenues, and profits remain fully protected and safeguarded until permanent state institutions are established in accordance with a permanent constitution for the country.
This came during a meeting held at the headquarters of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations in New York. The meeting brought together the Chairman of the Committee for the Verification of Frozen Libyan Assets Abroad, Yousef Al-Aqouri, and the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyansky, in the presence of committee members from the House of Representatives and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to a statement by the House of Representatives spokesperson on Thursday, the meeting discussed the issue of frozen Libyan assets and possible ways to enhance cooperation with the Russian side in this field, ensuring the preservation of these assets and preventing any tampering with them outside the approved legal and regulatory frameworks.
The meeting also addressed the latest political and economic developments in Libya, Russia's role in supporting the UN process to resolve the Libyan crisis, and opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation in areas of common interest.
The Russian Ambassador affirmed his country's support for proposals aimed at protecting Libyan assets, emphasizing the Russian Federation's commitment to positive cooperation with the House of Representatives and relevant Libyan institutions.
In the same context, the Verification Committee held another meeting with the UN Security Council Panel of Experts on Libya, where they reviewed the UN system for frozen Libyan assets and discussed the negative impacts of current freezing mechanisms.
The Committee presented practical proposals to address existing issues within the sanctions regime, with the aim of achieving a balance between international obligations and the Libyan state's rights to protect its resources and assets.
The Committee concluded its meetings by affirming the House of Representatives' full commitment to safeguarding the Libyan people's assets and ensuring their management according to the highest standards of transparency and accountability, to preserve the national interest until permanent state institutions are established in accordance with the country's constitution.
