Tripoli, October 9, 2025 (LANA) – Participants in the national dialogue on "Beaches and Marine Life: Between Investment and Environmental Preservation" recommended adopting environmental sustainability standards in the planning and implementation of tourism projects, launching a national program to monitor marine water quality, issuing legislation regulating beach management and diving activities, strengthening oversight of fishing and urban expansion, and involving local communities in protecting the coastal environment.
At the conclusion of the dialogue, held yesterday in Tripoli and jointly organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts of the Government of National Unity and the Development Organization for Supporting Youth and Women, participants also called for the development of a comprehensive national strategy for the management and development of the Libyan coasts. This strategy ensures the rational use of natural resources, preserves biodiversity, and enhances Libya's position as a promising ecotourism destination in the region.
The final recommendations emphasized the need to launch national community awareness programs and strengthen partnerships between the public and private sectors to support sustainable tourism initiatives, which contribute to protecting environmental resources and stimulating the local economy.
The opening session of the dialogue was attended by the Minister of Tourism and Traditional Industries, Nasreddine Al-Fazzani, along with a number of ministers, including the Minister of Planning, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the Minister of Labor and Rehabilitation. The dialogue also included undersecretaries from the Ministries of Tourism, Culture, and Youth, representatives of academic institutions and tourism colleges, and a number of environmental and tourism stakeholders.
In his opening remarks, the Minister of Tourism of the Government of National Unity emphasized that achieving a balance between tourism investment and environmental conservation is a strategic priority for the ministry, emphasizing that sustainable tourism development cannot be achieved without considering environmental and social dimensions at all stages of planning and implementation.
Samira Badr Al-Din Al-Masoudi, Chair of the Dialogue Preparatory Committee, explained that this event aims to build an integrated national vision to achieve a balance between economic development and the preservation of the marine and coastal environment, in line with national sustainability goals.
The dialogue was divided into four main themes, including: the tourism value of the Libyan coast; the current status of the marine environment – challenges and risks; tourism investment and environmental impacts; the role of the public and private sectors in environmental protection; and the design standards for tourism projects.
The sessions also included awareness-raising visual presentations that highlighted the beauty and diversity of Libya's coastline. An introductory presentation by Al Marah 2 Company showcased examples of projects based on the principles of responsible tourism and environmental conservation.
