Tripoli, 8 October 2025 (Lana)—EU Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, announced an in-depth exchange in Tripoli with Admiral Reda Issa, Commander of the Libyan Coast Guard, during which they discussed bilateral cooperation in the areas of maritime search and rescue and combating human smuggling.
“We reviewed the EU’s support for Libya’s efforts to save lives at sea and combat human smuggling, as well as reports of recent incidents at sea,” Orlando said in a tweet.
“We focused on ensuring full compliance with Libyan and international law in search and rescue operations. Our discussions also addressed ways to strengthen operational effectiveness, accountability, and humane migration management,” he added.
Orlando stressed the importance of bilateral cooperation to enhance maritime security, save lives, and combat irregular migration networks and human smuggling in the Mediterranean.
