Zintan, October 5, 2025 (LANA) - The eighth meeting of the Preparatory Committee for National Reconciliation began today, Sunday, in the city of Zintan. The meeting was sponsored by the Presidential Council and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), and with the support of the African Union. The meeting is part of the preparations for the Comprehensive Reconciliation Conference, which is a pivotal step towards building comprehensive peace and consolidating stability in the country.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the African Union, a number of ambassadors, and representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations operating in Libya.
In his opening remarks, House of Representatives member Abdul Salam Nasiya emphasized that the meeting represents an important milestone in the search for peace. He emphasized that political reconciliation is the true foundation for consolidating the values of national consensus and addressing major contentious issues, most notably the issue of arms, the position of the head of state, local governance, income distribution, and citizenship.
He explained that these issues can only be addressed through building trust, which, in turn, can only be built through serious dialogue and genuine concessions that pave the way for comprehensive national consensus within an inclusive national project that excludes no one and paves the way for general presidential and parliamentary elections whose results are acceptable to all, leading to the establishment of a state of institutions and law, development, justice, equal opportunity, and belonging.
Nassiya emphasized that Zintan's hosting of this meeting conveys a strong message that Libya is capable of overcoming its differences, provided there is sincere will, shared resolve, and a belief in the nation's unity and destiny.
The meeting is a continuation of previous meetings held in several Libyan cities. The seventh meeting of the Preparatory Committee was held on September 18 in Tripoli, with the participation of the African Union Mission, ambassadors of the High-Level Committee countries, and representatives of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).
In his opening remarks at the time, Presidential Council Chairman Mohamed Menfi emphasized that national reconciliation is a top priority, and that it is not merely an internal matter, but rather an issue linked to the stability of Libya and the region as a whole.
He pointed out that the Presidential Council places reconciliation at the heart of its national project, as it is the fundamental pillar for building a unified and secure state based on the rule of law and respect for rights and freedoms. He emphasized that the success of this process requires genuine political will, courageous concessions, and placing the nation's interests above all other considerations.
Al-Menfi emphasized that the people of Libya are capable of overcoming their differences and uniting around a single national project that will open horizons of peace, development, and prosperity for future generations. He called on everyone to continue working with a spirit of national and humanitarian responsibility to achieve the ultimate goal: a unified, stable, prosperous Libya that enjoys peace and participates effectively in its regional and international environment.
