European Union Renews Support for the Local Electoral Process in Libya.

Tripoli, September 26, 2025 (LANA) – The European Union reiterated its unwavering commitment to supporting the local electoral process in Libya, commending the swearing-in ceremony held yesterday in the capital, Tripoli, for the newly elected mayors and municipal council members, in the presence of the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbaiba.

The Head of the European Union Delegation to Libya, Nicola Orlando, expressed his appreciation for this step in a tweet on the X platform, saying: "I was honored to attend the swearing-in ceremony before the Prime Minister for the newly elected mayors and municipal council members. On behalf of the European Union, I wish the representatives of the Libyan people all the best, and I assure them that they will always find in us a reliable partner to improve service delivery and achieve peace and prosperity."

Orlando added that this occasion represents a renewed opportunity to call on all relevant institutions and parties across the country to support and protect the upcoming stages of the municipal elections, in line with the aspirations of the Libyan people to choose their representatives and leaders in a free and fair manner.

(298) elected members representing (35) municipal councils took the constitutional oath before the Prime Minister, including the municipalities of Zliten, Qasr al-Akhyar, Mislata, Qarabulli, Souq al-Juma, Ain Zara, Abu Salim, Tripoli Central, Hay al-Andalus, al-Maya, Suwani Bani Adam, al-Aziziyah, al-Maamoura, al-Zahraa, al-Zawiya Central, al-Zawiya al-Wusta, al-Zawiya al-Shamal, al-Zawiya al-Gharb, al-Zawiya al-Janub, Bir al-Ghanam, Sabratha, Surman, al-Ajilat, al-Jamil, al-Manshiya, Raqdalin, Nalut, al-Asabaa, Kikla, Batin al-Jabal, Yafran, Dhaher al-Jabal, Jadu, Tabqa and Ain al-Azahra, and al-Shwayrif.

In a speech delivered on the occasion, Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbaiba, emphasized that the success of the municipal elections confirms Libya's ability to fulfill its major national obligations. It sends a clear message that the Libyan people are ready for presidential and parliamentary elections and will not accept any attempts to infringe on their right to choose their leaders through the ballot box.

Dbaiba also warned against any attempts to obstruct or prevent the electoral process, stressing that anyone seeking to disrupt these elections will bear full responsibility. He also emphasized that the democratic will of the Libyan people cannot be restricted or circumvented.
