Orlando: We are keen to enhance cooperation with Libya in border management and respect for human rights.

Tripoli, September 18, 2025 (LANA) – The European Union Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, met yesterday, Wednesday, with Major General Mohamed Al-Marhani, Chairman of the Technical Committee for Migration and Border Security, in the presence of representatives from the Ministries of Interior, Defense, and Foreign Affairs.
Orlando explained in a post on the X platform that this meeting, which he described as fruitful, comes within the framework of preparations for the upcoming meeting of the joint technical mission between the European Union and Libya, which will focus on migration and border management issues, based on respect for human rights.
The ambassador indicated that the meeting reviewed the progress made in this file and explored new opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation, particularly in the areas of effective border management, the voluntary return of migrants, and coordination with the embassies of their countries of origin, in addition to cooperation with United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations supported by the European Union.
Orlando emphasized that the upcoming technical meeting will contribute to identifying actual needs and deepening cooperation with Libyan institutions across all regions.
He also noted that he raised the issue of recent incidents related to search and rescue operations during the meeting, explaining that there was agreement on the importance of strengthening mechanisms for monitoring compliance with human rights and investigating these incidents, ensuring accurate reporting and accountability, according to the European Ambassador's tweet.
