Tripoli, 18 September 2025 (Lana) The EU Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, met yesterday with MG Mohammed Marhani, in his capacity as technical head of the Supreme Committee for Migration, and representatives of the Ministries of Interior, Defense, and Foreign Affairs.
Orlando stated in a tweet that this meeting, which he described as productive discussions, came in preparation for the upcoming meeting of the EU–Libya Technical Mission on Rights-Based Migration and Border Management.
“We reviewed progress and identified opportunities for further cooperation, particularly on effective border management, voluntary returns of migrants, and engagement with the embassies of countries of origin, as well as with EU-supported UN agencies and NGOs,” Orlando said.
He emphasized that the forthcoming Technical Mission meeting will serve to identify needs and deepen cooperation with Libyan institutions across the country.
“I also raised recent search and rescue incidents, and we agreed on the need to strengthen mechanisms for monitoring human rights compliance and for investigating incidents to ensure accurate reporting and accountability,” he added.
