Tripoli, September 16, 2025 (LANA) – The European Union Delegation to Libya announced on Tuesday its intention to launch a new initiative aimed at enhancing the protection of World Heritage sites and stimulating cultural tourism in the country. This initiative is part of supporting international cooperation to protect Libya's cultural heritage.
This came during an official meeting between EU representatives from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Tourism Police of the Government of National Unity, held at the site of the historic city of Leptis Magna, one of the most prominent archaeological sites inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
The EU emphasized that the initiative aims to preserve the integrity of Libyan archaeological sites, assess the challenges and risks they face, and develop infrastructure to accommodate increasing numbers of visitors in the coming years.
The EU added in a post on its official page, "Preserving history, creating opportunities, and highlighting the richness of Libyan communities are at the heart of the partnership between the European Union and Libya."
The post indicated that protecting cultural heritage is not limited to preserving the past alone, but is a fundamental pillar for building a brighter future for future generations by supporting sustainable tourism and consolidating national identity and belonging.
It is worth noting that Leptis Magna is one of the most prominent archaeological cities in North Africa and a living testament to the greatness of Roman civilization in the region, making it a focal point for any international efforts aimed at protecting and promoting Libya's cultural heritage, both locally and globally.
