Tripoli, September 16, 2025 (LANA) – The Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ulrika Richardson, praised Libya's election to the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization (ILO), describing it as "a recognition of its commitment and an opportunity to contribute to the formulation of fair labor practices."

This came in a tweet posted by Richardson on Tuesday via her X account, following her meeting with the Minister of Labor and Rehabilitation and the Acting Minister of Education, Ali Al-Abed. Richardson affirmed the United Nations' readiness to support Libya on this vital path.

The UN official added that the meeting addressed ways to strengthen the Libyan labor market by aligning current and future employment needs with the vocational education and training system, thus enabling young people to acquire the skills necessary to succeed in the labor market.

The meeting also emphasized the importance of updating the legislation and regulations governing the labor market in Libya, in line with international standards, enhancing the work environment, and stimulating sustainable economic growth.

Richardson concluded her tweet by stressing that "Libya's election to the ILO Governing Body is an important opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to international standards and represents a step in the right direction toward building a better future for work in Libya."
