Tripoli, September 11, 2025 (LANA) – Today, Thursday, September 11, marks the second anniversary of the Derna flood disaster, a painful event that shook the conscience of all Libyans. Violent torrents swept through the city on an unforgettable, tragic night, triggered by the Mediterranean storm "Daniel," which struck the eastern region of the country on this day in 2023.

The two dams of Wadi Derna collapsed, sending a flood surging across the city to heights exceeding ten meters. The floods left widespread destruction, thousands of lives lost, tens of thousands displaced, entire neighborhoods destroyed, and the city isolated from its surroundings for several days.

The disaster was greater than words, and its spectacle is deeper than description. However, the horrific tragedy was also a defining moment in the history of national solidarity, as Libyans from all cities and regions rushed to help their families in Derna, in a humanitarian and historic stance that embodied the highest values of brotherhood and national unity.

Despite the horror of the tragedy, the resilience of the people of Derna, their determination to live, and the popular and institutional solidarity for reconstruction all stood as living testament to the strength of Libya's will and its unbreakable spirit of defiance.

On this painful anniversary, we renew our prayers for mercy and forgiveness for the martyrs of Derna, and we implore God Almighty to protect Libya and its people from all harm, to prevent such tragedies from recurring, and to keep radiant Derna a lasting symbol of resilience and hope, a witness that even when the nation is faced with severe hardships, it rises with its men and women, building from the rubble a more secure and stable future.
