Valletta, September 10, 2025 (LANA) – The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Taher Al-Baour, paid an official visit to the Republic of Malta on Wednesday, during which he met with Ian Borg, the Maltese Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the visit came at the invitation of the Maltese side. The two ministers held a closed meeting, which was later joined by delegations from both countries for extensive discussions. During the meeting, they discussed aspects of bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to strengthen and develop them in various fields, serving the interests of the two friendly peoples.
The two sides discussed a number of pressing issues, most notably the issue of illegal immigration and ways to enhance joint cooperation in border management and joint cooperation between the coast guards of the two countries, in addition to supporting development programs to address the root causes of migration.
The two sides stressed the importance of continuing political consultations between the two countries on issues of common interest and exchanging views on the current international situation, especially in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East.
The Maltese Foreign Minister indicated his country's intention to recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly this September, emphasizing the convergence of views between the two countries on these issues.
The two sides also discussed the issue of maritime borders and agreed on the importance of addressing aspects that can achieve positive and fruitful cooperation. Priority should be given to bilateral discussions in this regard, with the possibility of expanding to multilateral discussions if there is contact with a third or more countries.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides reiterated their commitment to continuing communication and coordination to contribute to strengthening bilateral cooperation and serving issues of common interest.
