Tripoli, 8 September 2025 (Lana) UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, stressed the importance of the House of Representatives (HoR) and High Council of State (HCS) moving forward with the necessary amendments in the electoral laws to enable the holding of national inclusive elections.

This came during her meeting yesterday in Benghazi with Gen. Saddam Haftar, where they discussed UNSMIL’s proposed political roadmap towards national elections and unified institutions, including security and military institutions.

“The discussion covered the importance of amending the existing electoral framework to enable the holding of national elections. Gen. Saddam Haftar reiterated the General Command’s commitment to peaceful political solutions that would end the transitional period and pave the way for inclusive elections and unified institutions,” UNSMIL said in a tweet.

The meeting also reviewed the humanitarian and refugee response, and Gen. Saddam Haftar outlined the Libyan National Army’s efforts to assist with the voluntary return of Sudanese refugees.
