Tripoli, August 22, 2025 (WAL) – The Ministry of Interior of the Government of National Unity announced that it had thwarted a failed attempt to target the headquarters of the United Nations Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) by launching an SPG rocket that struck a house in the city of Janzour, without causing any damage.
This came in a statement issued by the Ministry on Thursday night, which began by stating that, in a dangerous precedent for targeting international and diplomatic missions, and coinciding with a briefing by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, the Ministry of Interior had developed a strict security plan to secure the headquarters of the UNSMIL and all other diplomatic missions, in coordination with various security agencies.
The statement explained that, thanks to the vigilance of the police and security personnel, a failed attempt to target the headquarters of the UNSMIL with an SPG rocket was thwarted. It noted that a 2003 Toyota Camry was seized, inside which two additional rockets were found, in addition to the launcher used for the rocket.
The Ministry directed the competent authorities to identify the suspects. Investigations are currently underway, and the necessary information is being gathered to arrest them and bring them to justice. The Ministry affirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring security, protecting public and private property, and securing the headquarters of international missions and embassies. The Ministry emphasized that it will not tolerate criminals and outlaws, and that it is carrying out its duties with professionalism and skill, ensuring the promotion of security and stability and preventing any violations.
