Al-Lafi has reservations about the priorities of the House of Representatives

Tripoli, August 20, 2025 (LANA) – Presidential Council member Abdullah Al-Lafi expressed his reservations about the preoccupation of the House of Representatives, and those he described as "those orbiting in its orbit," with issuing laws related to addressing the public debt, at a time when Libyans are still awaiting electoral deadlines that have been postponed for years.
In a tweet posted on his official account on the "X" platform on Wednesday, Al-Lafi said that "financial legislation alone is not sufficient to address the suffering of the citizen," considering that "the heaviest burden on Libyans is not the numbers in the budget books, but rather the absence of national consensus that rebuilds trust and addresses the roots of the crisis."
He added: "The real challenge that everyone must face is overcoming the political impasse through a comprehensive consensus that includes all parties and supports any national project stemming from the pure Libyan will, far from narrow calculations or temporary disputes."
Al-Lafi's statements come amid growing calls to expedite elections and end the political stalemate. This comes amid fears that continued focus on financial issues without a comprehensive political solution could deepen the Libyan crisis rather than resolve it.
In its official session held yesterday, Tuesday, in Benghazi, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved the draft public debt law, with the comments of the Planning, Finance, and General Budget Committee on the law.
