Continuous power outages in Tobruk.

Pulbished on:

Tobruk, August 19, 2025 (LANA) – The city of Tobruk has been experiencing a severe electricity crisis for days. Its neighborhoods have been experiencing continuous power outages that have lasted for more than four days in some areas, amid fears of a complete collapse of the internal grid.

Mansour Madawi, a member of the municipal council and head of the city's emergency committee, explained to the Libyan News Agency that the outages are caused by the collapse of the main underground cables, which include more than 30 power carriers. He pointed out that the chronic shortage of distribution stations exacerbates the severity of the crisis and directly impacts the lives of citizens.

Madawi explained that the General Electricity Company has begun implementing an urgent plan to install new cables totaling 32 kilometers. He noted that maintenance teams have been working for ten days but are facing logistical difficulties, most notably the lack of a vehicle specialized in detecting faults, which has necessitated the use of equipment from the city of Derna.

He emphasized that the ongoing crisis is having negative repercussions on vital facilities and daily services in Tobruk, emphasizing the need to expedite the provision of the necessary support and activate the reconstruction plan referred to the Reconstruction Fund to achieve a comprehensive solution to the crisis.
