Benghazi, 19 August 2025 (Lana) The Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Committee of the House of Representatives (HoR) held a meeting yesterday, at the HoR's headquarters in Benghazi, with Daniel Strokes, Director of the German BIRD Foundation and assigned by the Swiss Foreign Ministry, and his accompanying delegation, to discuss enhancing international cooperation and supporting the national reconciliation process.

The official spokesperson for the HoR stated that the meeting discussed the national reconciliation process, a top priority for the HoR, which is working to achieve it through the enactment of laws regulating it and active participation in various relevant national forums and dialogues.

During the meeting, the committee reviewed the challenges faced by Benghazi, the constitutional headquarters of the HoR, in light of the war on terrorism, noting that the city, thanks to the Libyan Arab Armed Forces, has been able to eliminate extremist groups on behalf of the international community, paving the way for a new phase of reconstruction in the eastern and southern cities.

The committee emphasized that bringing together military organizations and ending divisions is crucial for achieving stability, securing borders, and reducing illegal migration, and they called for security agencies to be involved in the national reconciliation process to make sure it succeeds and lasts.

The Committee also commended the positive role of the African Union in supporting reconciliation efforts through its initiatives aimed at promoting dialogue between Libyan parties and offering its expertise in conflict resolution, emphasizing the importance of continued coordination with the Union as a key partner in the Libyan peace process.

For his part, Daniel Stokes appreciated the warm welcome, stressing that his visit aimed to listen to the various Libyan parties concerned with the reconciliation file, highlighting the significant efforts made by the HoR in this regard, and confirmed that he would share the results of his visit with the Committee upon its completion.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Committee emphasized that the national reconciliation project represents the cornerstone in building the modern Libyan state, commending the efforts of the Presidential Council in organizing specialized workshops on this issue, emphasizing that success in achieving national reconciliation is closely linked to resolving the institutional division and forming a unified government that includes all Libyans.
