Tripoli, August 16, 2025 (LANA) – The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) condemned in the strongest terms the attacks that targeted two field offices of the High National Elections Commission (HNEC) in Zawiya and the western coast yesterday.
The mission said in a statement that these criminal acts represent another serious assault on the electoral process and a blatant attempt to deprive citizens of their rights, undermine their right to choose their representatives, and obstruct the democratic process.
The mission added that these attacks threaten the ongoing municipal elections and the aspirations of the Libyan people for democracy more broadly.
The mission affirmed its unwavering support for the HNEC in carrying out its duties and called on security officials to provide the necessary vital support to enable the Libyan people to exercise their political rights without fear or intimidation.
The mission called for a comprehensive investigation to identify and hold accountable those responsible for these criminal acts.
The mission urged all relevant authorities and security institutions to take immediate measures to protect electoral premises, staff, and electoral materials, and to ensure that the Libyan people can freely and safely express their will tomorrow, Saturday.
The mission also called on all relevant authorities throughout Libya to work with the High National Elections Commission to enable the resumption of elections in all areas where the conduct of the elections was obstructed as soon as possible.
