Tripoli, August 16, 2025 (LANA) – The Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, praised the launch of the municipal elections for the second group, which began this morning, Saturday, in 26 municipalities, describing them as "an important step in building the desired democratic state."

Dabaiba stressed, in a tweet posted on his official account on X, that these elections reflect citizens' awareness and their desire to determine their own destiny by choosing who will manage their local affairs, thus enhancing the concept of popular participation.

The Prime Minister said: "This step embodies the extent of citizens' awareness in determining their own destiny and choosing the best way to build their state."

In the same context, he expressed his regret for what he described as "obstruction of the electoral process" in a number of municipalities within this group, considering that "preventing citizens from reaching the ballot boxes is an unacceptable act and poses a real test for those in charge of it regarding the upcoming elections, whether parliamentary or presidential."

Dabaiba reiterated his support for direct elections as the only strategic option for achieving stability, saying, "Direct elections remain our firm vision, which we support, and the only option we seek to achieve across the country, to overcome the political division and end the long and burdensome transitional stages for our country and our citizens."

These statements come at a time when a number of municipalities in Libya are holding local elections as part of a plan to renew legitimacy at the local level, amid official and popular calls to ensure their transparency and completion in all regions without exception.
