EU Ambassador: We wish the Libyan people successful municipal elections on August 16

Tripoli, August 16, 2025 (LANA) – The European Union Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, expressed his wishes for the success of the municipal elections scheduled for today, Saturday, calling on all concerned parties to ensure the freedom and regularity of the electoral process in all regions of the country. Ambassador Orlando tweeted, "We wish the Libyan people successful municipal elections on August 16, and we urge all concerned parties to ensure the free and orderly conduct of the electoral process throughout the country."

The European diplomat expressed concern over the suspension of voting in major cities and the attacks on the offices of the High National Elections Commission, warning that any attempt to intimidate voters or obstruct their right to choose their local representatives threatens Libya's democratic transition.

At the end of his tweet, the EU Ambassador to Libya reiterated the EU's full support for the High National Elections Commission, stressing the importance of holding accountable anyone who seeks to undermine the democratic process.

Libya is completing the second phase of municipal council elections today, after the first phase witnessed widespread participation in a number of municipalities.

These elections are part of efforts to support the democratic transition and strengthen local governance in the country, as part of a plan to hold regular elections in all Libyan municipalities.
