UN High Commissioner for Refugees warns of the increasing movement of Sudanese refugees from Chad to Libya.

Tripoli, 3 August 2025 (Lana): United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi warned of an escalation in migration flows from Libya and North Africa toward Europe due to a severe funding shortage for the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
Grandi told the “Financial Times” that Sudanese refugees are already moving from Chad to Libya, one of the most prominent migration routes toward Europe, stressing the need to increase support for host countries to enable the population to remain there, which would contribute to addressing many of the challenges on the ground.
He also pointed to growing indications that thousands of Sudanese refugees are moving north toward Libya, and from there to Europe, rather than staying in Sudan or neighboring countries like Chad.
Grandi described the UNHCR budget cuts as catastrophic, noting that they are pushing thousands of migrants toward Europe, and called on European capitals to support existing refugee reception facilities in Africa rather than investing in new systems.
He also stressed that cuts imposed by donors are hampering the agency's ability to manage migration flows, describing ignoring the situation in African countries as a grave strategic mistake.
